Humour me and think of the previous millennium for a moment, will ya. Y2k ya. When there was more film in the fridge than food and we were hucking tvs off balconies. My friend Olivia sent me a message last month, asking if I had heard from some of my buds from those days. Mikey, Daryl, Damir, Sully… Ashwin, Ivanhoe, Ryo, Yuriko, Shawn - the early film school days, 99-00 range.

It blew my mind that my address was also my birth date. We lived at 2274 Trafalgar - 8th and Trafalgar basically. We shot films in that house, had - a bender or two! Even family visited and joined in the fun. Swipe through and you’ll see the building, also a vignette of the neighbourhood that’s part of a student film. Though my alanis morissette repeat encounter is another story… if any of my old buds get this, say hi in the comments. And thanks @hellomissolivia for jogging my memory. I have a part 2 to this.

My mom lost her dad at a young age, and I know how hard that was for her.  I’m blessed to have this job. My best advice I can give for young dads out there is show up every day and don’t be so hard on yourself. It’s all of our first time. ❤️‍🔥

I wanted to know what it felt like to strap on a Santa sac and go to dear friends houses and share a surprise visit. I had been planning the gifts leading up and today I went for it. By foot and ttc. One friend west in the high park area, stop 2 v in the annex - then east to Kingston rd. It took about 5 hours tho just happened so smoothly and were such rewarding visits. The last house was east side to my brother gypsy J’s place. The front buzzer was malfunctioning because of the cold and I walked in and knocked on his door. Tatums eyes lit up. Was awesome.

She done good. The millennium focus had her final flight this eve. I was driving with my kids and she gave way in the middle of the road. Thanks to CAA and Scrap Car removal. The intention was to preserve the vehicle as long was practically possible. Over 200k clicks. Just shy of 20 yrs (as old as my nephew) This was the final of 3 custom paint jobs.

One of my favourite things about my oldest daughter’s name is how it sounds like “You and me”. Well it has been You and me since 2007 Umi.
I used to strap you into my kangaroo pouch and we would talk long journeys around the city together. I’d record little snippets on my cellphone and at the time the resolution was 176 × 144! Now you have an almost 11 year old sister and it is hard to remember life before. How far we have come together.

👼👼👼👼👼 I pulled a stack of VHS memories from a milk crate and for my folks’ 50th anniversary decided to capture them. The very first tape I put in was a party with many of my close friends and family. Some I hadn’t seen in a while and some that I wouldn’t be able to see no matter how hard I wanted to. In the first minute of viewing I saw 5 loved ones that are no longer with us. It made me pause and realize how special and important the people in my life are. It also punched me in the face with gratitude as my birthday approached (a time where we often evaluate our years).  The more we have become avatars and notifications, the more and more I realize how fortunate I am to have the people I have in my life. Thank you to you all and I hope to see you soon IRL.

As you watch, look for for the halo which honours those who are no longer with us. I call this one “5 angels”.

This is a special coming of age story. those that

This is a special coming of age story. those that happen once in a lifetime. And when you think you know a family member that’s when they surprise you most.

Last week my extended family gathered to honour the life of my Uncle Jim Nugent. A beautiful but bittersweet event. I was happy to see a lot of people that I love in one place. After the ceremony my cousin Jimmy Pat (the 3rd) walked up to me and said, ‘J I have something for you’. I thought to myself, I should be the one giving a gift to you shouldn’t I? I came to sit down on the front stoop, and Jimmy walked over to me with a folded up plastic grocery bag and handed it to me.

I reached into the bag and pulled out a black well-weathered baseball glove. I put it on and it fit me perfectly. It turned it over and ‘Nuge’ was handwritten in sharpie on the Mizuno tag… I looked up at Jimmy and he told me this story…

During a time when I was in the US playing baseball, my cousins and my Uncle Jim were secretly obsessed with the game. Well secretly to me anyhow. I clearly remember them coming to my games to watch though I wasn’t aware of how passionate they were about the pastime. At a point Jimmy was getting more serious about playing and was in need of a proper mitt, and he mentioned it to my dad. My dad immediately had an idea and gave Jimmy this gently used black Mizuno mitt.

This was my glove.   It was a glove that I used before I got drafted and when I put it on my hand a wave of memories and emotions washed over me. I had no idea how much this meant to Jimmy at the time and I don’t think he had any idea how much it meant to me when he gave it back to me last weekend. This is a full circle story that I will remember forever and tell my loved ones until the day that I pass.

It’s often hard finding good news today. Everyone seems to be trying to get the upper hand. I remember growing up we all tried to help each other out, in our neighbourhood and in our community… my folks were a great example.

Some days Dad’s job was harder than others. And a few of those hard days made headline news. I was going through some old newspaper articles on newspapers.com for research, and I uncovered a few of them.   I remember talking to dad the morning after this one. It was a massive chemical fire and who knows whether that contributed to his cancer later years, though he was the guy to go up to disconnect nearly 5000 volts to protect the firemen putting out the fire. He did it for the community, for his family. It was the right thing and it was part of the job. I’ll let the @windsorstar tell the rest of the story.

Happy birthday to a living legend. John ‘Hollywood’ Adam. Well John isn’t his real name, neither is Hollywood. Though you can’t walk a block in his hometown of Windsor without someone calling one of them out. If you don’t know the story of why they call them Hollywood, I remember he told us one day at the dinner table… back when he was refereeing in the International Hockey League, he used to walk into the arena in with his sunglasses on. This is for evening games now… he had a penchant for showmanship, his colleagues dubbed him Hollywood and it has stuck. And why they call him John and not his real name.. well that’s another story.

I feel like life is a series of decisions, and you never really know exactly which one is the right one. A lot like what Doc explained to Marty, if you choose one adventure over another, it might change the fabric of you life from now until eternity. Back when I was 17 I was presented with a big decision. One that I was likely not ready to make. I remember thinking back to it, almost as if it didn’t really happen. Thanks to my dad, and the treasure trove that is our basement, I am occasionally reminded of these progressively foggy moments…   This year, when I picked this folder out of a tote that my dad had prepared for me during the holidays, a wave of memories came over me. I remember being very surprised to have received this package. It was a scholarship offer from Princeton University. Right around the same time, I got a folder from another well known entity with an equally enticing offer, the Kansas City Royals. I made the choice to go pro and I still wasn’t even old enough to vote. Which one would you have chosen? Do you think I made the right choice? My philosophy has always been, make the choice and go for it 100%, don’t look back… so no regrets, though I will always wonder what would have happened if I chose door number 2 🤔

 Note: This is the second ferment of a 2-step fermentation process. If you are looking to learn out how do the first ferment, follow the link in my story. You can make the SCOBY culture from scratch though if you would like one, I have plenty, just send me a message.
